The Musicmen Cometh!

This is the marriage of two musical minds, Josh Bain and Nolan Ross. Friends since high school, they've seen the seven wonders of the world, jumped from helicopters, hang-glided, climbed Mt. Everest, and even offered jokes over dinner with Bono, Springsteen, Clapton, and others.

Okay, none of that is true except the friends since high school part. Nonetheless, these guys love music and love talking about it. We hope you enjoy it.

Roman Candle

It’s not often I get to write about bands from North Carolina, but over the past few years, the music scene coming from Asheville, Raleigh, and Chapel Hill have been extremely important and pleasant for music.  It’s truly been a great thing to see.

The band I am writing about today is Roman Candle.  These guys have been around since ‘97, writing and playing, doing the demos/EPs/small records/big records thing for a good while.  It wasn’t until 2006, when their first album saw the light of day on a major label.  The Wee Hours Revue was of critical acclaim at the time, getting helpful recognition from North Carolina newspapers’ art and music section, Paste Magazine, and the ever-faithful, word of mouth of the fans.

Things have been good for the band.  Their sophomore effort, Oh Tall Tree In The Ear, was released on May 12th and has been a wonderful addition to 2009’s music repertoire of amazing releases this year!  ”Eden Was A Garden” is the instant favorite, recalling McCartney’s “Band On the Run,” respectively.  ”Why Modern Rock Is A-Ok” will make you grin.  I promise.  ”Big Light” is the moment in the record when you really feel that this is something special.  The second half of the record really holds up.  And that’s why I think this record is one of my favorites thus far in 2009.

Obviously, this comes highly recommended from me, so please do yourself a service and buy the record and share in the love of Roman Candle.
